Laser engraving and rotary engraving: what each does to the surface
What laser engraving actually does
Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to burn or vaporise a thin layer of the surface material, leaving a mark that sits below the surface. On stainless steel, anodised aluminium and most hard plastics, the beam either darkens the metal through a heat reaction or removes a coating to reveal the base material underneath. The result is a mark that cannot flake, peel or wash off, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to come away.
What rotary engraving actually does
Rotary engraving works differently: a rotating cutting bit, similar in principle to a very fine drill, physically ploughs a groove into the material. It suits softer metals such as silver, gold and pewter, and it is the technique behind most jewellery engraving, because it can follow a hand-lettered or script font in a way a laser sometimes struggles to render cleanly at small sizes. The groove has real physical depth, which is why rotary-engraved jewellery can be re-polished several times over its life before the mark eventually wears too shallow to read.
Where each holds up, and where it doesn't
Laser engraving on stainless steel or anodised metal is essentially permanent under normal handling; the limitation isn't durability, it's colour. The mark is always a tonal shift in the base material, a lighter or darker version of the metal itself. If a design depends on colour reproduction, laser engraving is the wrong technique regardless of how durable it is.
Rotary engraving on soft precious metals wears down over decades of contact with skin, clothing and repeated polishing, which is a genuine consideration on a ring or bangle intended to be worn daily rather than kept in a box. It isn't a defect in the technique; it's a property of cutting into a soft metal, and a supplier working in silver or gold should be able to tell you how deep the standard cut is and how that compares with a heavier engraving option if the piece will see daily wear.
The question worth asking a supplier
Before ordering, ask which of the two techniques they'll actually use, not just whether the item is "engraved", since the word covers both processes and they behave differently over time. For anything in stainless steel, laser is standard and durability is rarely the issue. For anything in silver, gold or pewter, ask about cut depth and how the item is expected to age with wear, particularly if it's meant to be worn rather than displayed. Why embroidery survives the wash and screen printing does not
What each technique does to the fabric
Embroidery works the thread through the fabric itself, so the design is held by stitches passing in and out of the weave. Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil onto the surface, where it cures as a thin layer bonded to the fibres. That difference in mechanism, thread through the cloth versus ink on the cloth, is what decides how each one ages.
Wash-fastness: the point where each one fails
Wash-fastness is the technical term for how well a design resists washing, and it is the number that actually matters for anything worn or used regularly. Embroidery on a well-chosen fabric can go through industrial-strength washing at 60°C without visible colour loss, because the thread is the same colour all the way through and there is nothing sitting on the surface to abrade. Screen printing on cotton typically starts to fade after somewhere around 30 washes, with the exact point depending on wash temperature, detergent strength and whether the item is tumble dried, because each wash cycle physically wears away a little of the cured ink layer.
Why the fabric underneath matters
Embroidery needs a fabric with enough thread density to hold the stitches without the design puckering or the backing showing through, which is why it works well on woven cotton and polo shirts but poorly on very loose knits or thin jersey. Screen printing has fewer restrictions on fabric type, which is one reason it is used more widely, but that flexibility is also why it is chosen for items that were never expected to last for years. If the gift is something that will be worn and washed for a long time, such as a towel, a robe or a piece of workwear, the fabric needs to suit embroidery before embroidery is worth choosing.
What this costs you in money and time
As an indicative range for 2024/2025, a small monogram from a UK embroiderer typically adds around £8 to £18 per item on top of the base product, and adds two to four working days to the order because it is a separate personalisation step from the printing itself; confirm both figures with the specific supplier before relying on them. Screen printing is usually cheaper for a single design and faster to turn around, particularly for one-off items, so the honest trade-off is durability against cost and speed.
Digital printing, foil blocking, hand-lettering and embossing: where looks and durability pull apart
These four techniques get chosen because they look striking on the day the gift is opened. What they have in common is less flattering: each one gives away something in durability to get that appearance, and the trade-off is different for each, so the right question to ask a supplier is not "can you do this" but "what happens to this after twenty washes, six months in a pocket, or a year on a shelf".
Digital printing (DTG, direct to garment)
Digital printing sprays ink directly onto the fibres of a fabric, the way an inkjet printer applies ink to paper. It can reproduce full colour and fine detail, including photographs, in a way embroidery and screen printing cannot match. The ink sits on the surface of the fibre rather than being woven or stitched in, so it fades with washing, and cotton washed at higher temperatures loses colour faster than fabric washed cool. If the gift is a T-shirt or tote bag that will go through a washing machine regularly, ask what wash temperature the print was tested at.
Foil blocking
Foil blocking uses heat and pressure to bond a thin layer of metallic or pigmented foil onto a surface such as leather, card or wood. The result is a crisp, reflective finish that engraving and printing cannot produce, which is why it turns up on book covers, invitations and the corners of leather notebooks. The bond is a surface bond, though, so it can lift or scuff with repeated flexing or handling. It suits items that are looked at rather than gripped daily: a keepsake box or a printed card holds foil well; a wallet carried and bent every day does not.
Hand-lettering
Hand-lettering describes a style, a script that looks written by hand, and it is worth separating from the method used to put it on the item. Some suppliers apply it by genuinely hand-painting or hand-engraving each piece; others use a font designed to look hand-drawn and reproduce it by the same printing or engraving process they use for any other design. The style itself carries no durability at all. What lasts is whichever underlying technique carried it, so ask the supplier which process is actually applying the lettering to your item.
Embossing and debossing
Embossing presses a design up out of a surface using a die and pressure; debossing presses it down into the surface. Neither uses ink or colour, so the effect relies entirely on light and shadow across the raised or recessed shape. Because the mark is a physical deformation of the material rather than a coating sitting on top, it does not fade or wash off, and on leather it tends to hold its shape well over years of handling. On paper, repeated folding or heavy handling can flatten a deep emboss over time, so a card that will be kept flat in a drawer holds the impression better than one carried in a bag.

Which technique for which occasion
Every personalisation technique does two different things at once: it marks the item, and it ages at its own rate. Before comparing engraving against embroidery or foil blocking against screen printing, it helps to work out what you actually need from the object, because the right technique for a keepsake is often the wrong one for something disposable.
How long the gift needs to last
A wedding gift, a retirement gift or a christening gift is usually meant to be kept for good. The recipient may use it daily for decades, so the personalisation has to survive handling, washing, sunlight or all three without the name or date fading, flaking or rubbing away.
Plenty of personalised gifts are not in that category at all. A phone case, a tote bag bought for a hen do, or a mug someone will chip and replace within a year or two is a consumable, and putting a permanent, expensive technique on a short-lived object is money spent on durability nobody will ever test.
What the item is made of
The material rules techniques in or out before durability even comes into it. Metal can be engraved or etched. Fabric can be embroidered or printed. Wood, leather and glass each suit some methods and reject others outright, and no supplier can embroider a stainless steel water bottle or laser-engrave a cotton t-shirt.
Once the material narrows the options, the choice among the remaining techniques usually comes down to how the mark is made: cut into the surface, built up on top of it, or fused into the fibres. Combining the two
- Long-term keepsake, hard material: engraving, etching or embossing, because the mark sits in or below the surface.
- Long-term keepsake, fabric: embroidery, because a stitched thread survives repeated washing in a way that printed ink does not.
- Short-term or novelty item: digital printing, screen printing or foil blocking are usually adequate, and paying for a technique built for decades of wear is not always the better choice.
- One-off ceremonial piece: hand-lettering, where the value is in the mark being unrepeatable.
